Autism and Eating.
If you have a picky eater with autism, know that you’re not alone. Children with autism are often more likely to have mealtime challenges such as extremely narrow food selections, ritualistic eating behaviors (e.g. no foods can touch) and meal-related tantrums.
How do you know if it is behaviour relating to autism or behaviour relating to fussy eating?
From our experience in Kids Cook, talking to parents and from the inquiries we receive regularly, we decided to see if we could do anything to help.
Kids Cook has brought together Sarah Keogh of Eatwell.ie and Tricia Lynch of Advance Therapy Systems to provide parents an opportunity to get some professional support.
It seems that many parents are at a loss and have nowhere to go for advice on feeding issues for children with autism. There is a lot of misinformation about “Autism and diet” and parents find themselves desperate to try anything, sometimes with no solid scientific evidence of success.
Our aim is to give parents the correct and professional advice on how to manage food difficulties associated with children with Autism. We aim to help parents with this by offering a class run by an Occupational Therapist and a Registered Dietitian.
The session will be run by Sarah Keogh (dietitian) and Tricia Lynch from ATS who are well experienced in their field. They will each give you an insight into different aspects of eating difficulties and Autism.
They will each speak on their subject.
You will be given an opportunity to submit questions before the date. There will also be a Q&A element incorporated and a chance at the end to have a cup of tea and chat with other parents.
Everyone attending will leave armed with practical information about understanding and dealing with sensory and behavioural issues that can cause issues around food. You will also receive advice on the nutritional needs of growing children and how omitting certain food groups from a child’s diet (without medical supervision) can have a negative impact on a child’s health.
Places are limited so early booking advised.
